Founded in 1949 in Leeds as an Associated Dairy and Farm Store, the name Asda was realised when the Asquith group of supermarkets and the Associated Dairies merged, Asda was an abbreviation of Asquith and Dairies. For a while Asda was part of a group, which included MFI and Allied Carpets, until MFI and Allied were sold off and the name changed to Asda Group plc. At the same time the dairy division was sold on loosing all connection with its original beginnings and the name for which it was remembered. Today Asda is owned by the Wal-Mart Group, which bought the Asda Group plc in 1999.
