Doris and Don Fisher founded Banana Republic way back in 1969 towards the end of the swinging sixties. Don was having trouble simply finding a pair of jeans that would fit; it was the beginning of a terrific journey that saw them transform retail in a big way. Guided by their vision to succeed coupled with compassion with humility they grew the company into a name famous around the world for offering speciality clothing for men, women and children.
Banana Republic are part of the Gap inc group including other brands, Gap, Old Navy, Piperlime and Athleta spread across over three thousand stores and 134,000 employees cementing their success as not only a great retailer but a trusted employer providing long lasting and rewarding employment for their loyal staff.
Gap Inc is still growing globally opening their first store in China in 2010 along with new stores in Australia and Italy to compliment their growth in 80 countries. Throughout this, Gap have stuck to the same principles that have kept them successful from the very start, always thinking of the customer first, striving for creativity and delivering results.
The Fisher family are still deeply involved in Gap Inc's business and still own a significant quantity of the company's shares. Donald Fisher remained on the board until his death on September 27, 2009. Doris Fisher and their son Robert serve on the Gap board of directors with Robert taking the reins from his Father Donald as Chairman of the board. This core involvement by the Fisher family ensures the long standing traditions remain in Gap Inc for many years to come.
