Homebase History
Homebase is part of the multi-brand home retail group and were originally founded in 1979 by the Sainsbury's chain of grocery stores; the DIY stores were originally named Sainsbury's Homebase, they opened its very first store in Croydon. A major boost in store numbers came in 1995 when the group purchasing a rival chain Texas Homecare. All the Texas stores were rebranded with the Home base name and internal layouts to match the current stores.
In December 2000 Sainsbury's sold off the Homebase DIY stores to capital venture company Schroder Ventures in a deal worth £969 million. Many of the company's proposed store sites were sold off to B&Q for an estimated £220 as it reeled in some of the planned investment.
In 2002 Homebase was purchased by GUS plc forming the Argos retail group. Due to a demerger of Experian and ARG in 2006 Homebase are now owned by the Home Retail Group which was formed from the demerged ARG group. In 2007 The Home Retail Group purchased 27 leasehold properties from Focus DIY for £40 million to further strengthen their position in the DIY market.
They currently have over 300 out of town stores and currently stock over 30,000 products within its core ranges of decorating, homeware, DIY and furniture.
