Weight Watchers had very humble beginnings. Founded In the early 1960's by Jean Nidetch in Queens, New York, she discovered the best way to control weight gain was simply to eat normal everyday food and to be able talk to friends and other people who would understand and trying to achieve the same weight loss goals.
Jean got together with her friends for a coffee and asked if they would help her in following a medical diet suggested by her hospital dietician.
They agreed to meet at regular intervals to keep up with each others successes. Jean held meetings in other friend's houses and the weight loss group continued to grow. Shortly after she founded Weight Watchers with businessman Al Lippert.

Now over 6,000 meetings are now held each week by a Weight Watchers group leader who has also lost weight successfully with Weight Watchers.
